Reasons for IVF Failure

Picture109

Many people experience sadness, disappointment, and frustration following the failure of an IVF cycle. Although experiencing these emotions is completely natural, you should not place blame yourself or your partner. IVF can fail for a variety of reasons, the majority of which are completely beyond your control. Consult the fertility doctor, who will be able to clarify what might have occurred and the appropriate course of action.Unfortunately, IVF treatment is not always effective. Younger women have a better chance of success with IVF, with a success rate of 40% for women under 35.

We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently cited reasons for IVF failure.

The Embryo’s Quality

One of the most common causes for an IVF cycle to fail is poor embryo quality. Numerous embryos are unable to implant after being transferred to the uterus due to defects. Embryos that appear to be healthy in the laboratory may have invisible defects that cause them to die instead of growing. When this occurs, it is almost always due to the foetus, not the uterus.

The Egg’s Age

While the age of the woman undergoing IVF is critical, it is the age of the eggs that is more critical. As a woman ages, the quality and quantity of her eggs deteriorate. This would have a major impact on her chances of conception, both with and without IVF. Around 25% of embryos used in IVF would result in a live birth on average. At Nurture Fertility, our success rate is 39% for women under the age of 38 and 17% for women over the age of 38. I will let you the figures for our centre[1] , please enter those.

When using donor eggs, older women have a greater risk of success with IVF, as the eggs of a healthy young (less than 25 years) donor will be used.

Ovarian Response

On rare occasions, a woman’s ovaries do not react appropriately to IVF medication and fail to produce adequate and multiple eggs. Producing enough eggs can be difficult for women over the age of 37, those with elevated follicle-stimulating hormone levels or those with Premature ovarian failure.. If this is the case for you, IVF is likely to fail. Someone will consult with you to determine the likelihood of this occurring and to discuss any necessary adjustments to your fertility medications.

Chromosomes

Chromosomal defects are often the cause of miscarriages and IVF implantation failure. Women over the age of 30 are more likely to have chromosomal anomalies in their eggs, which rises further in the mid-40’s. Same applies to men also over the age of 45 years.

Lifestyle

You will almost certainly be advised to discontinue smoking three months prior to the start of your IVF treatment if you are a smoker. Smokers also need up to twice the number of IVF cycles and are more likely to experience a miscarriage. If you are either overweight or underweight, you should strive to achieve a healthier weight in order to improve the chances of IVF success. Adequate rest and sleep is important as also eating healthy and on time.
